The Family of Green (and Blue) Flashes at Sunrise and Sunset
May 12, 2025
Photographer: Marco Meniero
Summary Author: Marco Meniero
The majority of all green flash observations (about two-thirds or three-quarters) result from an inferior mirage. The rest are mainly due to mock mirages. This is a type of inferior mirage that generates multiple fictitious images that change shape and position as the Sun's position (rising or setting) changes. It differs from a simple inferior mirage because the latter generates only a fake image below the real one. The collage of photos shown above was captured from various times and locations in Italy.
Photo Details: Taken with Nikon Z9 camera; Nikon Z400/4.5 lens, and 2X (then cropped).
